In Maya Angelou's I Know Why The Cage Bird Sing, Maya talks about her struggle of trying to fit in to her society. When Maya was 3 her parents got divorced and sent her and her older brother Bailey via train to live with their grandmother in Arizona. Her grandma owned a store in the black neighborhood of Stamps. during cotton picking season the grandmother, " Momma", would wake up at for in the morning and make/sell lunches to the workers. Maya also has an uncle Willie, Willie had an accident as a child and was crippled for most of his life. Willie would try to acted not crippled when he worked in the store, he would
hide his walking cane stand up straight but when it came to talking he couldn't hide his speech impairment..She talks about wanted to be white, and she starts to find a love of reading, she especially likes and in her words fell in love with William Shakespeare, but Maya had to hide it cause Momma wouldn't understand why she would like a white man and make her read something by James Weldon Johnson. So far with reading this book i really enjoy it and cant wait for what is to come. I want to see what the future holds for Maya with her guiltiness of liking white famous men, if uncle Willie will learn how to cope more with his disability, and seeing how Maya and Bailey grow up.
